Wang Wentao: China actively supports hosting successful APEC events this year

On the afternoon of May 18th, Minister Wang Wentao of Commerce held a telephone conversation with Minister Damien O’Connor for Trade and Export Growth of New Zealand and exchanged views on trade and economic cooperation under APEC.

Wang Wentao said that China and New Zealand are important partners to each other. China will actively support New Zealand, which is the host of APEC 2021, in hosting a series of economic and trade events, jointly push for achievements in this year’s APEC trade and economic cooperation and pave the way for a successful APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting on trade and economic fronts.

Wang Wentao said that China agrees with New Zealand on the arrangement and agenda of the 27th APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT). APEC members should continue to work together to fight the virus and ensure fair distribution of vaccines as a global public good, especially for the benefit of developing economies. APEC members should also continue to promote cooperation in such areas as regional economic integration, supply chain connectivity, digital economy and inclusive growth, make progress in the development of the Asia-Pacific free trade area and work together to achieve post-pandemic economic recovery in the region. China is willing to work with APEC members to actively promote WTO reform and jointly push for outcomes of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, and hopes that the Appellate Body will resume operation as soon as possible to enhance the confidence of all parties in the multilateral trading system.

Minister O’Connor said that the New Zealand-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations for New Zealand and that trade and economic cooperation between the two countries is beneficial and complementary to both sides. New Zealand appreciates China’s support for New Zealand’s hosting of APEC 2021 and is ready to work with economies, including China, to make this year’s MTR a success, facilitate post-pandemic economic recovery in Asia Pacific and give a boost to the WTO reform. At the same time, New Zealand appreciates the important role played by China in supporting the international community in the fight against the epidemic, and thanks China for its efforts and contributions in vaccine production and global distribution.
